Comprehensive Ranking System

Understanding the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by the Canadian government to assess and rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. It is the cornerstone of Canada’s immigration policy for managing applications for permanent residence under three main federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. The CRS evaluates candidates based on factors such as skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other elements that contribute to economic success for immigrants once in Canada.

How CRS Works?

Candidates in the Express Entry pool are given a score out of a possible 1,200 points. The CRS score is used to rank prospective immigrants. Periodically, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts draws, inviting the highest-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence.

The CRS allocates points based on the following criteria:

  • Core/Human Capital Factors: Age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience.
  • Spousal Factors: If applicable, the education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience of the candidate’s spouse or common-law partner.
  • Skill Transferability Factors: Combination of education, foreign work experience, and certificate of qualification in a trade.
Additional Points: Factors such as having a provincial nomination, a valid job offer, a Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate, or a sibling living in Canada as a citizen or permanent resident.

CRS Score and ITA

The CRS score required to receive an ITA varies with each Express Entry draw, depending on the number of candidates in the pool and the number of ITAs that IRCC plans to issue. Monitoring these trends can help candidates gauge their chances of receiving an ITA.
