The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a streamlined visa processing program designed to expedite the study permit application process for international students from select countries. This initiative aims to provide a faster and more efficient pathway for eligible students to pursue their educational aspirations in Canada. Below, we delve into the key aspects of the SDS program, including the application process, eligibility criteria, and how to apply.

Eligibility requirements for SDS

  • Residency Requirement: Applicants must be residents of one of the countries participating in the SDS program, including but not limited to:
    • Antigua and Barbuda
    • Brazil
    • China
    • Colombia
    • Costa Rica
    • India
    • Morocco
    • Pakistan
    • Peru
    • Philippines
    • Senegal
    • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
    • Trinidad and Tobago
    • Vietnam
  • Acceptance at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI): Candidates must possess a letter of acceptance from a DLI in Canada for a full-time program of study.
  • Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French by providing valid language test results that meet the SDS requirements.
  • Financial Capacity: Candidates must provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation to their home country.
      • Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) in the amount required for the intended province or territory of study, which is CAN$20,635 for SDS applications received on or after January 1, 2024.
      • Provide proof of having paid tuition for the first year of study if planning to study outside Quebec.
  • Additional Requirements: 
    • Get a medical exam before applying if required.
    • Obtain a police certificate before applying if required.
    • Submit the most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s).
    • Obtain a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province or territory where planning to study, which is mandatory for study permit applications as of January 22, 2024.
