The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a specialized immigration pathway designed to attract skilled workers with experience in specific trade occupations to Canada. Administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the FSTP Canada offers a streamlined process for eligible candidates to obtain permanent residency in Canada, provided they meet certain criteria.

Requirements for Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

  • Occupational Eligibility: The FSTP focuses on occupations classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system as skilled trades. These include occupations such as electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, and industrial mechanics.
  • Work Experience Requirement: To be eligible for the FSTP, applicants must have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the five years preceding the application. The work experience must be in an eligible occupation listed in one of these NOC groups.
    Major Group 72: Technical trades, transportation officers, and controllers (excluding Sub-Major Group 726).
    Major Group 73: General trades.
    Major Group 82: Supervisors in natural resources, agriculture, and related production.
    Major Group 83: Occupations in natural resources and related production.
    Major Group 92: Processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisors and operators.
    Major Group 93: Central control, process operators, and aircraft assembly assemblers and inspectors (excluding Sub-Major Group 932).
    Minor Group 6320: Cooks, butchers, and bakers.
    Unit Group 62200: Chefs.
  • Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification: Applicants must either have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer for at least one year or a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
  • Language Ability: Applicants must take approved language tests in writing, reading, listening, and speaking, meeting the minimum required scores, with results valid on the day of applying for permanent residence.
  • Proof of Funds: Applicants must show they have sufficient funds for settlement in Canada unless they can legally work in Canada and have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
